TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Executive Yuan spokesman Chen Shih-kai (陳世凱) announced on Thursday (Aug. 15) that Taiwan's overall power supply remains sufficient, emphasizing ongoing efforts to develop power sources in northern Taiwan.

Chen's statement addressed concerns raised by Taoyuan Mayor Simon Chang (張善政) regarding regional power distribution. Chang cited Taiwan Power Company (Taipower, 台電)’s recent announcement that it would refuse to approve power supply applications for data centers in northern Taiwan requesting more than 5 MW of electricity, leading him to question whether the central government's claim of 'sufficient power supply' accurately reflects the current situation.

In response, Chen emphasized that while Taiwan's overall power supply is sufficient, it is unevenly distributed. He highlighted that the government and Taipower are working to enhance grid and power source development in northern Taiwan.

Chen noted that while north Taiwan consumed 92 billion kWh in 2023, it generated only 75 billion kWh locally, necessitating support from central and southern Taiwan. Chen reiterated the government's commitment to active communication with local authorities.
