TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Etron (鈺創) Chairman Nicky Lu (盧超群) predicted on Wednesday (Sept. 4) that Taiwan's semiconductor industry will generate US$160 billion in revenue in 2024, accounting for over 25% of the global market. Lu shared this optimistic outlook at the SEMICON Taiwan 2024 opening ceremony, emphasizing Taiwan's pivotal role in the global semiconductor sector.

Lu highlighted advancements in Taiwan's 2-nanometer process technology and its importance for AI through heterogeneous integration (HI) and circuit optimization, which can reduce power consumption issues. He believes significant trends such as AI, large language models, and quantum computing will propel the semiconductor industry into a 20-year golden era.

He also noted that TSMC (台積電) is expanding production in the U.S., Japan, and Germany, while ASE (日月光) invested in the U.S. and Malaysia. GlobalWafers (環球晶) operates 18 factories in nine countries, fostering international cooperation and sharing technological achievements.

SEMI President and CEO Ajit Manocha underscored Taiwan's crucial role in the AI wave and semiconductor industry, having visited Taiwan at least 120 times. Manocha stressed that AI is just beginning its development and will drive the semiconductor industry to new heights; cooperation is crucial to overcome talent shortages.

Manocha estimated that this year's semiconductor exhibition would attract 85,000 visitors, breaking historical records, with exhibitors from 56 countries, up from 44 last year. He anticipates visitor numbers will soon surpass the 100,000 mark, setting a new milestone for the event.
