TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan braces for five consecutive days of rain starting Friday (Sept. 20) due to a low-pressure system, according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA, 氣象署). The administration issued heavy and torrential rain advisories for northern, central, and southern regions on Friday, warning residents to prepare for severe weather.
The CWA specifically alerted Pingtung, Kaohsiung, and Taitung cities and counties about potential heavy rainfall. Meteorologist Wu Der-rong (吳德榮) noted that a "monsoon low-pressure circulation" will move northward, bringing thunderstorms and severe weather through next Tuesday.
Wu further explained that unstable atmospheric conditions could lead to localized thunderstorms across southern Taiwan starting Friday and Saturday. He remarked that strong convection will gradually expand northward from the morning, increasing the likelihood of heavy thunderstorms in various regions.
Lin Te-en (林得恩), a Ph.D. in atmospheric science from National Taiwan University, shared on Facebook that intermittent showers or thunderstorms will affect central, southern, and southeastern mountain regions over the weekend. He warned that rainfall intensity may reach the level of heavy or torrential rain.
Rainfall will ease by next Wednesday and Thursday, with northern Taiwan experiencing brief showers. Afternoon thunderstorms may still occur near mountainous areas, and northern Taiwan will remain slightly cooler.
