PINGTUNG (TVBS News) — Authorities launched a human trafficking investigation after a high school student from Taiwan went missing on Tuesday (Sept. 17). The family of the student, Ruan (阮), used a tracking system to locate him in Myanmar, prompting the police to seek assistance from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA, 外交部).

Ruan, an 18-year-old vocational high school student from Pingtung (屏東), had traveled to Taoyuan (桃園) to visit friends on Sept. 6. He maintained communication while en route but suddenly lost contact on Sept. 17.

The family immediately used a tracking system to search for him, discovering that Ruan and his friend were in Thailand. The last known location showed them in Myanmar, with no further responses to messages.

Pingtung police confirmed that Ruan left the country on Sept. 8, boarding a flight to Thailand.

This incident follows the recent disappearance of Kuo Yu-hsuan (郭宇軒), a 22-year-old recent graduate, who went missing after entering Shanghai in late August. China's Taiwan Affairs Office (TAO, 國台辦) confirmed on Sept. 23 that Kuo is under investigation for alleged involvement in fraud.
