TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A former China Central Television (CCTV, 中國中央電視台) reporter announced on (Sept. 25) that he will formally sue Taiwan's National Immigration Agency (移民署).

Former Chinese reporter Wang Zhian (王志安) claims the agency's decision to ban him from entering Taiwan for five years is politically motivated.

Wang entered Taiwan in January under a tourist visa but appeared on a talk show, which the agency deemed a violation of his visa terms.

Wang stated that his lawsuit is challenging because it is the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP, 民進黨) government's retaliation and a political decision.

He said that he wants to see if the Republic of China's (ROC, 中華民國) judicial system can rise above partisan interests and provide relief to people from mainland China.

Wang's controversial remarks on the talk show included comparing Taiwan's election rallies to a show and mocking a deceased legislative candidate with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA).

Wang, a former CCTV reporter, faced censorship in June 2019 when Chinese authorities abruptly shut down his social media accounts. He later moved to Japan, where his YouTube channel now boasts 1.57 million subscribers.
