TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Minister of Transportation Chen Shih-kai (陳世凱) announced on Friday (Sept. 27) plans to introduce a new license plate design next year to reduce counterfeiting. The ministry also considers increasing penalties for using fake plates to curb the issue.

Chen responded to Democratic Progressive Party (DPP, 民進黨) Legislator Lin Chun-hsien (林俊憲), who highlighted a significant rise in fake plate cases.

According to the National Police Agency (警政署), incidents soared from a few dozen last year to 627 this year, with nearly 40% involving suspended plates.

Lin pointed out that severe speeding violations surged after last year's law change, which lowered the threshold from 60 km/h to 40 km/h over the limit. Violations jumped from about 15,000 annually to 60,000 last year, with 50,000 cases reported by August this year.

Chen stated that the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC, 交通部) will review national highways and discuss speed limit rationality with local governments and police agencies. Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) emphasized the need to consider safety in revising regulations, advocating for a more humane approach if certain speed limits prove unreasonable.
