TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜) addressed the nation on Taiwan's National Day on Thursday (Oct. 10), expressing hopes for prosperity and peace for the Republic of China (中華民國).

A grand ceremony in front of the Presidential Office marked the country’s 113th birthday. Speaking to the crowd, Han emphasized the courage needed to assert the Republic of China's presence and to display the national flag internationally, despite restrictions in many settings.

Han called for unity among Taiwan's diverse ideologies, encapsulating his vision in four key phrases: "The Republic of China is our nation, beautiful Taiwan is our home, Chinese culture is our root, and freedom and democracy are our treasures."

The event drew numerous political figures, including former Presidents Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) and Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文), former Vice President Chen Chien-jen (陳建仁), and Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰).

Reflecting on the Republic of China's 113-year history, Han highlighted Taiwan’s development despite challenges and expressed gratitude to citizens for their contributions. He noted Taiwan’s industrial achievements, despite making up just 0.3% of the global population, and stressed the need for solidarity to safeguard the island.

Han also underscored the importance of the national flag in maintaining Taiwan’s stable and free environment amid global shifts. He advocated for continued democratic progress through legislative reforms aimed at creating a transparent government.

Acknowledging the contributions of overseas compatriots, Han invited them to visit Taiwan more frequently. Concluding his address, Han thanked Taiwan’s 23 million citizens and National Day organizers, expressing hope for the Republic’s continued prosperity.
