TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) delivered his first National Day speech on Thursday (Oct. 10), reaffirming Taiwan's commitment to global prosperity, progress, and welfare despite the country's limited international recognition.

Addressing the crowd, Lai emphasized his role as president is to "ensure that our nation endures and progresses" while uniting Taiwan's 23 million people. He also pledged to "resist any annexation or encroachment on our sovereignty."

The president urged China to embrace its international responsibilities, collaborate with Taiwan to foster regional peace, and address conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.

Lai highlighted Taiwan's contributions during the COVID-19 pandemic through the "Taiwan Can Help" initiative, which also paved the way for committees aimed at combating climate change and other global challenges.

He reaffirmed Taiwan's determination to defend its sovereignty and maintain stability across the Taiwan Strait. Lai also advocated for dignified and orderly cross-strait dialogue, underscoring four key commitments: defending sovereignty, maintaining the status quo, ensuring respectful cross-strait exchanges, and upholding democracy and freedom.

As Taiwan navigates complex international dynamics, Lai's speech signals a tone of resilience and cooperation. Observers will be watching closely for China's response and any potential shifts in cross-strait relations.
