TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense (MND, 國防部) announced on Tuesday (Oct. 22) that the Chinese military's live-fire drills in the Pingtan (平潭) waters off Fujian (福建) are routine exercises. The ministry plans to use joint intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance systems to closely monitor the situation.

China's Maritime Safety Administration (海事局) issued a navigation warning on Monday, stating that live-fire exercises would unfold from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday off the coast of Niushan Island (牛山島). The warning advised vessels to avoid the area during the drills.

MND emphasized that these exercises might be part of broader efforts to enhance deterrence in the Taiwan Strait. The ministry stated that they will adhere to the principle of anticipating potential threats and will closely monitor and respond appropriately.

Last week, the Chinese military concluded the "Joint Sword-2024B" (聯合利劍-2024B) exercise, which encircled Taiwan. This exercise highlighted a recent uptick in military activities. The MND continues to review these activities and intentions, underscoring the need for vigilance in the face of frequent military maneuvers.
