Taiwan assures food security in crisis (TVBS News)

TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Ministry of Agriculture (MOA, 農業部) submitted a wartime food plan to the Legislative Yuan (立法院) on Wednesday (Oct. 23), assuring citizens of the country's food security, and highlighting that current public rice stocks can sustain the population for at least seven months.

The MOA's report also mentioned that vegetables can be self-sufficient year-round, and poultry and livestock supplies can last more than a year. The ministry plans to release reserved agricultural products and continue production, prioritizing crops like sweet potatoes and soybeans. It also evaluates using ponds to breed resilient omnivorous fish.

According to the "Food Administration Act" (糧食管理法), Taiwan must maintain a rice stockpile sufficient for three months. The current public grain warehouses, distributed across 17 counties and 161 townships, follow a strategy to mitigate attack risks, the MOA stated.

To further ensure food security, the ministry has planned to establish a food security promotion team. This team will assess and manage the supply of agricultural products and materials, providing monthly updates on food production and supply dynamics. These updates aim to enhance Taiwan's food security warning mechanism, addressing geopolitical or emergency risks.
