NEW TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Typhoon Trami (潭美) has unleashed strong winds and heavy rain across several regions in Taiwan. New Taipei City Education Department (NTPC, 新北教育局) authorized school principals to decide on class cancellations or adjustments based on local weather and traffic conditions on Thursday (Oct. 24).

Though Trami will not make landfall in Taiwan, its outer circulation combined with the northeast monsoon has prompted the Central Weather Administration (CWA, 氣象署) to issue a rainfall advisory. Between Thursday afternoon and Friday afternoon, the Taipei and New Taipei areas could see up to 400 millimeters of rain within 24 hours, meeting the criteria for work and class suspension in both urban and mountainous regions of New Taipei City (新北市).

The NTPC has instructed schools in each district to stay alert to weather changes and prepare accordingly. According to the procedures for "work and class status during natural disasters" (天然災害停止上班及上課作業辦法), the mayor of a special municipality decides on suspensions during such events. Schools in New Taipei City will follow these guidelines to ensure compliance.

Per the regulation, school heads have the discretion to halt work and classes based on actual conditions. This empowers principals to make informed decisions regarding class implementation or activity adjustments. Residents should stay informed about further announcements from local authorities to ensure safety.
