TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) on Tuesday (Oct. 29) revealed the government's openness to new nuclear technology under three conditions while delivering a report on energy and electricity prices at the Legislative Yuan (立法院).

Cho emphasized that the government respects discussions on nuclear power, stating that it will consider new nuclear technology if it meets safety standards, avoids nuclear waste issues, and gains societal consensus.

The written report highlighted the government's focus on international developments in new energy, including nuclear technology. Cho tasked the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA, 經濟部) and Taiwan Power Company (台電公司) with drafting a talent retention plan for the nuclear sector.

However, he stressed the necessity of adhering to the Nuclear Reactor Facilities Regulation Act (核子反應器設施管制法), which limits the operational lifespan of nuclear power plants. Cho pointed out that the Maanshan Nuclear Power Plant (核三廠) Unit 2 is scheduled to run until May next year.

Premier noted Taiwan's high population density and location in a seismic zone, emphasizing the need for careful consideration of nuclear safety, waste management, and societal agreement before advancing nuclear energy initiatives.
