TAICHUNG (TVBS News) — The 2024 Taichung International Animation Festival kicked off on Oct. 18 at Taroko Vieshow Cinemas in Taichung, Taiwan, marking its 10th anniversary with a 10-day celebration. The festival, Taiwan's largest animation event, sold out its early-bird package within two days and launched a limited "10th Anniversary Celebration Package" that included a special T-shirt.
A strong lineup of filmmakers, including Deputy Secretary-General Lin Yu-hong, Director-General Luan Chih-yi, and international directors like C. Jay Shih, Olga Bobrowska, and Boris Labbé, attended the opening press conference. The event celebrated its milestone with a unique "Taichill Friends" cake tower.
Deputy Secretary-General Luan Chih-yi praised the festival's international stature, aligning it with global events like Animafest Zagreb and Seoul Indie-AniFest. Luan pointed out that the festival brings renowned animation works to Taiwan, allowing local fans to enjoy them without traveling abroad.
Deputy Director Chang Wan-yu also noted the success of the 10th-anniversary celebration, with giant balloons and outdoor screenings attracting large crowds despite heavy rain.
Program Director Wang Chi-sui announced 62 works from 107 countries competing for a total prize of NT$1.35 million. Boris Labbé was the "Director in Focus," and WIT STUDIO, 100studio, and Miyu Distribution were the "Studio in Focus."
Corporate sponsors offered limited-edition gifts through a bingo game featuring prizes like Mille co-branded popcorn and Pah Ji Hue’s tea sets. The festival also introduced a new "audio description" event for visually impaired attendees.
The festival's 10th anniversary showcased its unprecedented scale and international appeal, setting a high bar for future events.
