TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安) urged the central government on Monday (Nov. 4) to provide an electricity rate discount for Taipei Metro (臺北捷運) to ease operational burdens. Chiang emphasized the significant impact of electricity price adjustments on Taipei Metro's operations, noting the rising annual electricity cost share.

Taipei Metro transports more than 2 million passengers daily, according to Chiang, who called on the central government to assess and consider a discount plan. He stated that Taipei Metro will evaluate overall strategies to maintain stable operations by cutting expenses and increasing revenue, ensuring convenient transportation for citizens.

Taipei Rapid Transit Corporation (臺北大眾捷運股份有限公司) President Huang Ching-shinn (黃清信) recently highlighted the 75% cumulative increase in electricity prices over the past three years. Due to the cost surge, he remarked that a fare hike is inevitable. Huang also mentioned that Taipei Metro's personnel expenses have increased by NT$2.1 billion, and to prevent fare increases, the company will prioritize reducing discounts.
