TAOYUAN (TVBS News) — Taoyuan Mayor Chang San-cheng (張善政) on Wednesday (Nov. 6) announced discussions with Taiwan Power Company (台灣電力公司) to enhance power supply solutions and prevent similar disruptions in the future. Typhoon Kong-rey wreaked havoc in Taiwan last week, leaving nearly 9,000 households in Fuxing District (復興區) without power.

The city government plans to collaborate with telecom operators, the National Communications Commission (NCC, 國家通訊傳播委員會), and Taiwan Power Company to establish a communication platform. This initiative will facilitate timely contact and support during natural disasters, expediting recovery processes.

Chang highlighted the typhoon's severe impact, noting that Fangafangasa (新興部落) became isolated due to road blockages, necessitating airlifted supplies. The city mobilized 800 sanitation workers and over 7,300 environmental volunteers to restore normalcy, employing 150 cleaning machines for post-disaster recovery efforts.

The typhoon damaged 98 schools in Taoyuan, primarily due to fallen trees and roofing issues. Estimated losses reached NT$21 million. The Department of Education (教育局) has instructed schools to inspect campuses for safety. For repair funding, the Department of Finance (財政局) will fully support schools using disaster preparedness funds, supplementing internal budgets.
