TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC, 陸委會) issued a statement clearing Hong Kong actor and singer Andy Lau (劉德華) to perform in Taiwan despite controversy over his political stance. MAC Deputy Minister Liang Wen-chieh (梁文傑) told the Legislative Yuan that Lau lacks official documentation as a member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC). He emphasized that the CPPCC holds a marginal role in China's political system, and the MAC does not use it as a criterion for review.

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP, 民進黨) legislator Wang Ting-yu (王定宇) criticized Lau's perceived pro-Beijing stance on issues like the Hong Kong protests and military threats to Taiwan. However, MAC Minister Chiu Chui-cheng (邱垂正) previously confirmed Lau has not made statements harmful to Taiwan, allowing his performance to proceed.

Liang reiterated that the MAC's "red line" is maintaining Taiwan's national status. He cited a previous incident in Ximending, where individuals faced immediate expulsion for disrespecting Taiwan's sovereignty. Liang stated that the MAC handles other situations on a case-by-case basis, ensuring Taiwan's dignity remains intact.
