TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan is poised to take a giant leap in semiconductor innovation as the head of the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC, 國家科學及技術委員會) announced Thursday (Nov. 28) that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC, 台積電) will commence mass production using its cutting-edge 2-nanometer process next year. This groundbreaking development opens the door to potential discussions about establishing a factory in the U.S., further solidifying Taiwan's position as a leader in global tech advancements.
Speaking at a session with the Education and Culture Committee (立法院教育及文化委員會) at the Legislative Yuan, NSTC Minister Wu Cheng-wen (吳誠文) assured Kuomintang (KMT, 國民黨) Legislator Ko Ju-chun (葛如鈞) that Taiwan would retain the advanced research and development process. When pressed about the earliest possible timeline for establishing a 2-nanometer process U.S. factory, however, Wu responded that it might be around 2028, 2029, or 2030.
Meanwhile, Democratic Progressive Party (DPP, 民進黨) Legislator Ngalim Tiunn (張雅琳) inquired about the second wave of national core key technology projects announced in early November. The ten new projects include high-performance chip design technology, artificial intelligence computing, and manufacturing technology for small satellite deployment. Wu noted that these projects have progressed smoothly, with no exceptional industry feedback during the announcement period and no specific U.S. concerns.
