TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Uber Eats expressed disappointment about failing to acquire Foodpanda's operations, according to a statement issued on Wednesday (Dec. 25). However, the company plans to continue investing in Taiwan, emphasizing that the country remains one of the highest-growth delivery markets globally.

The Fair Trade Commission (公平交易委員會) blocked Uber Eats' acquisition of Foodpanda's Taiwan delivery operations a day earlier. The commission cited concerns that the merger would give the combined entity a market share exceeding 90%, raising competition concerns that outweigh potential economic benefits.

The commission stated that Uber Eats, unburdened by competition, could not ensure the maintenance of competitive practices through corrective measures, leading to the decision to prohibit the merger. In response, Delivery Hero (Foodpanda's German parent company) released a statement committing to continuing to develop and operate in the Taiwan market while optimizing services.

Uber Eats announced its intention to acquire Foodpanda's Taiwan delivery business on May 14, causing a significant stir in the industry and drawing widespread attention.
