TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A tragic case involving a 17-year-old girl's death has sparked outrage in Taiwan, leading to threats against a McDonald's (麥當勞) branch. Police increased patrols after the branch received a threatening call promising to vandalize the store on Thursday (Dec. 26). The girl's mother had earlier accused a supervisor of sexually assaulting her daughter for a year. She revealed on Threads that her daughter, who worked at a McDonald's about 500 meters from their home, endured sexual assault by a supervisor named Li. The girl ended her life in November.

Public outcry followed the revelation, with many refusing to patronize McDonald's in protest. The incident has intensified scrutiny of the fast-food giant's handling of the case. The city's Department of Labor (北市勞動局) fined McDonald's NT$1 million for not complying with the "Gender Equality in Employment Act" (性別平等工作法) on Wednesday. The department noted the company's failure to provide psychological counseling. McDonald's responded by stating, "We humbly accept this and are conducting an internal review," pledging to enhance support for employees filing complaints.
