TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's finance minister revealed on Thursday (Jan. 2) that discussions regarding the potential extension of the "Preferential Housing Loans for the Youth" (新青安貸款) policy could begin in 2026. The announcement came during the Finance Committee's review of the 2025 central government budget, as the policy is scheduled to expire at the end of July 2026.
Finance Minister Chuang Tsui-yun (莊翠雲) noted that the initiative has helped citizens purchase homes since its inception. She mentioned that, depending on the circumstances, a decision on whether to continue the policy would be made three months before its expiration. Democratic Progressive Party (DPP, 民進黨) Legislator Lai Hui-yuan (賴惠員) expressed concern about the policy's future, to which Chuang responded that discussions on a possible extension would occur next year.
Following the Central Bank's (中央銀行) interest rate hikes, mortgage rates have surpassed 2%. In response, the Ministry of Finance's (財政部) eight major banks relaxed conditions for youth loans, with interest rate subsidies in place until July 31, 2026. The new measures include increasing the maximum loan amount to NT$10 million, extending the loan term to 40 years, and lengthening the grace period to five years.
