MIAOLI (TVBS News) — Miaoli County's (苗栗縣) Sanyi Township (三義鄉) on Thursday (Jan. 2) announced an increase in childbirth subsidies, doubling the amount to NT$20,000 per child in a bid to boost birth rates. The township, renowned for attractions like Shengxing Station (勝興車站) and Longteng Bridge (龍騰斷橋), faces an aging population. Township Mayor Lu Ming-Chung (呂明忠) identified a stark demographic trend in 2024, with over 170 deaths compared to just over 60 births.

Lu noted that many young residents have moved to nearby Taichung City's (台中市) Houli District (后里區) and other areas due to job opportunities, leading to a decline in local birth rates. As Lu has discussed with the council chair and other representatives, the township will adjust its budget to accommodate the increased subsidies. He emphasized the importance of developing tourism and agriculture to attract young people back to Sanyi Township. As the township seeks to reverse its demographic challenges, these initiatives may pave the way for a more vibrant future.
