TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A measles outbreak in central Taiwan has put the nation on high alert, with health authorities scrambling to contain the highly contagious virus. The outbreak, which originated from a case involving a visitor from Vietnam, has already infected 16 people and exposed over 3,000 contacts, sending shockwaves through the community.

Dr. Chen Chih-chin (陳志金), a critical care physician, sounded the alarm on Friday (Jan. 10), emphasizing the alarming transmissibility of measles. "One infected individual can spread the virus to more than 10 others," he warned, highlighting the urgency of the situation.

The outbreak has not only affected the general public but has also infiltrated major public transportation systems, including the Taipei Metro, Taichung Metro, and Kaohsiung Metro. This extensive reach has raised concerns about the potential for widespread transmission, as the virus can linger in the air for up to two hours and infect anyone within a 2-meter radius of an infected person.

According to Dr. Chen, measles is a formidable foe, boasting a contagiousness six times greater than that of COVID-19. Symptoms mimic those of a common cold, including fever, cough, rhinitis, conjunctivitis, and rash, making it difficult to distinguish from other illnesses.

While the doctor advised those unvaccinated and younger than 44, vaccinated individuals aged 28 to 43, immunocompromised persons, and pregnant women to exercise caution, he reassured the general public not to panic. However, the gravity of the situation cannot be understated, as the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control (CDC, 中央疾管署) continues to monitor the outbreak closely.

As the nation grapples with this public health crisis, Dr. Chen's words serve as a stark reminder of the importance of vaccination and vigilance. The public must remain informed and adhere to health advisories to prevent further spread and protect the most vulnerable among us. The fight against measles is far from over, but with swift action and a united front, Taiwan can emerge victorious.
