TSMC leads global semiconductor market in Q3 2024

TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC, 台積電) dominated the global semiconductor arena in the third quarter of 2024, achieving a 64% capacity utilization rate, according to a report by Counterpoint Research published on Friday (Jan. 10). Counterpoint Research reported that TSMC's 3-nanometer process accounted for 13% of its production, making it the second-largest process technology. The company benefited from the demand for AI accelerators and robust smartphone sales, it said.
Samsung emerged as the second-largest foundry, capturing a 12% market share with increased shipments in 4-nanometer and 5-nanometer processes, while Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (中芯國際) secured the third position with a 6% market share, driven by China's domestic demand recovery and strong demand for mature processes like 28-nanometers. United Microelectronics Corporation and GlobalFoundries Inc. maintained a 5% market share, supported by stable markets in IoT and communication infrastructure.
Counterpoint Research highlighted that demand from NVIDIA and others pushed the 5-nanometer and 4-nanometer processes to account for 24% of production. TSMC's 3-nanometer process reached full capacity, surpassing 7-nanometer and 6-nanometer processes, thanks to growth in products from Apple, Qualcomm, MediaTek, and Intel. The company plans to begin mass production of its 2-nanometer process in 2025 at its Hsinchu Baoshan plant.
