TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan Power Company (台電) announced significant energy savings at a press conference on Tuesday (Jan. 14), revealing that residential users conserved 1.7 billion kilowatt-hours last year. This achievement equates to the annual electricity consumption of nearly 420,000 households and a reduction of approximately 840,000 metric tons of carbon emissions.

The company's statistics indicate that 12.59 million households participated in energy-saving initiatives last year, each saving an average of 135 kilowatt-hours. The total savings amounted to 1.7 billion kilowatt-hours, with feedback rewards reaching NT$1.399 billion. Since launching its nationwide energy-saving campaign in 2013, Taiwan Power Company has saved over 30 billion kilowatt-hours.

Chen Ming-shu (陳銘樹), Taiwan Power Company's vice president, noted the residential savings of about 1.7 billion kilowatt-hours last year. However, he pointed out that the electricity demand grew by approximately 2% due to the expansion needs of the high-tech and semiconductor sectors.

Regarding Nvidia's decision on its Taiwan headquarters location, the company stated it has not contacted Nvidia but will meet the industry's electricity needs. Facing accumulated losses exceeding NT$400 billion, Chen expressed hope the Legislative Yuan (立法院) would approve a NT$200 billion subsidy to prevent further financial deterioration. As Taiwan Power Company continues to navigate these challenges, the focus remains on balancing energy conservation with industrial growth.
