MIAOLI (TVBS News) — A massive crowd gathered at Baishatun Gongtian Temple (白沙屯拱天宮) on Tuesday (Jan. 14) as the temple announced the schedule for this year's Baishatun Mazu (白沙屯媽祖) pilgrimage to Beigang (北港). The pilgrimage will commence on May 1 at 11:25 p.m., with Mazu departing for Beigang, where the group plans to arrive by May 3. The return journey will conclude on May 11.
Temple officials highlighted the pilgrimage's demanding pace, noting that the two-and-a-half-day trek to Beigang during hot weather presents a significant challenge for participants. The return journey allows more time for rest, spanning 10 days and 9 nights. The temple staff advised participants to be mentally prepared for the strenuous conditions.
Local residents anticipate increased participation this year, as the pilgrimage begins on Labor Day (勞動節), followed by a Friday, potentially drawing more followers. Last year, nearly 180,000 devotees signed up, setting a record for the event. The temple will open on-site registration for this year's pilgrimage on March 27.
