TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) on Tuesday (Jan. 14) unveiled a comprehensive plan to safeguard public safety during the upcoming nine-day Lunar New Year holiday. Cho's directives include cracking down on illegal gambling, promoting anti-drunk driving campaigns, and enhancing anti-fraud measures, with increased patrols to protect citizens and their assets as needed.

The Executive Yuan (行政院) emphasized the need for the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (交通部) and the National Police Agency (警政署) to manage traffic efficiently at popular tourist spots, bustling markets, highways, and transit hubs. Cho instructed authorities to ensure smooth traffic flow and prevent congestion during the holiday.

Cho stressed the importance of heightened vigilance at crowded venues like financial institutions. He called for the National Police Agency to intensify patrols and, if necessary, assist citizens to safeguard lives and property. He also urged agencies to target illegal gambling websites and establishments to deter unlawful activities.

Addressing health and safety concerns, Cho highlighted the dangerous conditions in illicit cigarette factories, where harmful substances could be added during production. He directed the National Treasury Administration (國庫署), National Immigration Agency (移民署), and Coast Guard Administration (海巡署) to ramp up enforcement efforts to protect public health and national security.

Cho revealed that criminal groups often disguise cigarette raw materials as fertilizers or pesticides for import. He tasked the Ministry of Finance (財政部) and Ministry of Agriculture (農業部) with strengthening inspections and promptly notifying relevant agencies for joint crackdowns. Additionally, Cho instructed the Ocean Affairs Council (海洋委員會) to continue analyzing smuggling trends to curb the spread of illicit tobacco products.
