TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) on Thursday (Jan. 16) warned that the opposition's proposal to cut over 3,000 items from the central government's 2025 annual budget could significantly weaken Taiwan's national strength in five key areas, including competitiveness, security, technological advancement, public service performance, and government communication.

Speaking at a press conference addressing the substantial impact, Cho cautioned that budget cuts could allow competitors to catch up and adversaries to exploit vulnerabilities, jeopardizing national security. He emphasized that weakened technological development could hinder Taiwan's ability to maintain its edge, potentially causing it to lose its critical role in the democratic supply chain.

Also, Cho noted that slashing media promotion funds would impair the government's ability to clarify major policies, thereby fostering the spread of misinformation and endangering society. Cho urged the opposition to approach the budget review rationally, stressing that "reviewing the budget is not about venting emotions or conducting retaliatory reviews."

Minister of Economic Affairs J.W. Kuo (郭智輝) echoed concerns, stating that significant budget cuts could severely impact Taiwan Power Company's (Taipower, 台電) finances, potentially affecting electricity prices. The ongoing debate over the budget underscores the critical balance between fiscal responsibility and national priorities.
