TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA, 外交部) on Thursday (Jan. 16) dismissed claims by a Kuomintang (國民黨, KMT) legislator that Honduras seeks to reestablish diplomatic ties with Taiwan. The ministry emphasized that such statements lack factual basis, asserting that the government will not entertain unfounded expectations to maintain national dignity.

KMT Legislator Liao Hsien-hsiang (廖先翔) proposed resuming relations with Honduras following a significant drop in shrimp exports. He also suggested cutting NT$400 million from the ministry's budget. Responding to queries from the Central News Agency (CNA, 中央社), the ministry noted that since severing ties with Taiwan, Honduras has collaborated with China and Nicaragua's authoritarian regime, actively suppressing Taiwan's participation in regional organizations.

The ministry highlighted that Honduras ended diplomatic relations with Taiwan in March 2023 and established ties with China. Honduran President Xiomara Castro visited Beijing in June of the same year. This diplomatic shift led to frequent high-level exchanges between China and Honduras, including visits by China's Vice Minister Hua Chunying (華春瑩) to Honduras in August 2024 and Honduran Vice President Renato Florentino to China in November 2024.

Despite Honduras' alignment with China, the ministry remains vigilant and open to opportunities that could elevate Taiwan's international standing. The ministry closely monitors Honduras's political landscape, recognizing the importance of maintaining Taiwan's global presence and influence.
