TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The opposition Kuomintang (KMT, 國民黨) party has stirred controversy by proposing a budget cut of NT$2.3 billion allocated for the Public Television Service Online (PTS, 公視). KMT caucus deputy secretary-general Wang Hung-wei (王鴻薇) announced a compromise to reduce the budget by 1% on Friday (Jan. 17), equating to a NT$23 million cut.

The 2025 central government's budget proposal is under review in the Legislative Yuan. KMT Legislator Chen Yu-jen (陳玉珍) initially suggested canceling NT$2.3 billion allocated for film and music initiatives. The KMT held a press conference, with key figures like Wang, deputy secretary-general Lo Chih-chiang (羅智強), and legislator Chang Chia-chun (張嘉郡) attending. They criticized the spread of misinformation about the budget, urging an end to false narratives that target opposition parties.

Wang emphasized the ongoing review process in the Legislative Yuan, where various parties and committees submit proposals. She clarified that the budget undergoes integration of different proposals before final approval, resulting in a single version. She cited the PTS budget as an example, noting Chen's individual proposal to cut NT$2.3 billion, alongside other KMT legislators' submissions.

Wang confirmed the final decision to reduce the NT$2.3 billion subsidy by 1%, stressing that budget amendments are standard procedure. She warned against spreading fake news, urging online influencers and political factions to cease creating misleading narratives.
