TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Ministry of Environment (MOENV, 環境部) warned that starting Friday (Jan. 24), northeastern winds will affect Taiwan's air quality, particularly in southern regions. The Taiwan Air Quality Monitoring Network (空氣品質監測網) predicts an orange alert level for Kaohsiung and Pingtung, indicating unhealthy conditions for sensitive groups due to poor pollutant dispersion.

MOENV noted that the northeastern monsoon will strengthen on Friday, placing central and southern Taiwan downwind with poor vertical dispersion. This situation makes it easier for pollutants to accumulate, with localized low clouds or fog potentially affecting visibility in Matsu during the early morning.

The ministry forecasts that the air quality in Yilan, Hualien, and Taitung will remain good. Meanwhile, northern Taiwan, Hsinchu, Miaoli, central regions, Yunlin, Chiayi, Tainan, Matsu, Kinmen, and Penghu will experience moderate air quality. Before noon, Yunlin, Chiayi, and Tainan may briefly reach orange alert levels.

The ministry stated that the northeastern winds will continue on Saturday and Sunday, keeping central and southern Taiwan under poor dispersion conditions. The forecast for these two days also predicts an orange alert level for Kaohsiung and Pingtung. Residents in affected areas should take precautions, particularly those with respiratory conditions. Monitoring updates from the MOENV will be crucial as the situation develops.
