TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwanese renowned actress Barbie Hsu (徐熙媛) passed away during the Lunar New Year in Japan due to pneumonia triggered by the flu at age 48, confirmed by Dee Hsu (徐熙娣), her sister, on Monday (Feb. 3).

Dee expressed her sorrow through a statement given by her publicist, saying, "Our dearest and kindest sister, Barbie, has sadly left us. I am grateful to have been her sister in this lifetime."

In 1994, at 17, Barbie Hsu debuted as part of the female duo "S.O.S" alongside her younger sister, Dee Hsu. In 1996, she and Dee began hosting the variety show Guess Guess Guess (我猜我猜我猜猜猜) and later co-hosted 100% Entertainment (娛樂百分百). In 2001, she starred in Meteor Garden (流星花園) and was nominated for Best Actress at the Golden Bell Awards (金鐘獎).

Earlier in January, former Chairman of China Airlines (華航) Hsieh Shih-chien (謝世謙) also died of influenza complications, highlighting the severity of the flu outbreak affecting Taiwan.

Hsieh succumbed to a heart attack at home, triggered by the flu, at age 73. Hsieh attended a signing ceremony between China Airlines and labor unions the day before his death, where he mentioned contracting a severe cold.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC, 疾管署) has issued a health advisory in response to the outbreak, urging individuals over 65 and those with chronic illnesses to seek medical attention if they experience symptoms like difficulty breathing.
