TAICHUNG (TVBS News) — Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen (盧秀燕) on Monday (Feb. 3) announced plans to visit Japan this year.

Lu assured the public that details of the visit would be disclosed once finalized. She highlighted Taichung's historical ties with Japan, dating back to the Taichung Park Pavilion (湖心亭) construction in 1908, which marked the opening of Taiwan's longitudinal railway.

During a media interview, Lu stressed the significance of city diplomacy, which had been delayed due to the pandemic. She emphasized the need to strengthen city and national diplomatic efforts.

When asked about running for the Kuomintang (KMT, 國民黨) chairwomanship, Lu refrained from a direct response, stating that during the New Year, people should speak positively to bring happiness to citizens and wish for national harmony and social stability.

Lu expressed gratitude to transportation, police, fire, and medical personnel who worked tirelessly during the New Year celebrations. Regarding the recall initiative by civic groups, she urged that during the Lunar New Year, people should pray for peace and prosperity, setting aside politics to prioritize livelihood, economy, and education.
