TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL, 中華職棒) President Tsai Chi-chang (蔡其昌) and Chinese Taipei Baseball Association (CTBA, 中華民國棒球協會) Chairman Jeffrey Koo Jr. (辜仲諒) and the Ministry of Education (MOE, 教育部) on Monday (Feb. 3) pledged a total of NT$900,000 (around US$27,217) additional financial support to Taiwan's baseball team.

Taiwan's team kicked off its World Baseball Classic (WBC) qualifying campaign with a training ceremony at the Taipei Dome (台北大巨蛋) on the same day where Tsai, Koo, and Education Minister Cheng Ying-yao (鄭英耀) attended the event. The CPBL contributed NT$500,000, the CTBA provided NT$200,000, and the MOE donated NT$200,000 to support Team Taiwan, hoping they secure victory in every game.

Tsai emphasized the importance of the qualifying matches, urging players to maintain their fighting spirit, and expressed gratitude for the MOE and the baseball association's support and collaboration.

Of the 36-member roster, 27 players reported for duty, gearing up for the tournament. The national team roster includes 19 pitchers, 4 catchers, 8 infielders, and 5 outfielders, with Chen Chieh-hsien (陳傑憲) returning as captain. Chen noted the team's youthful energy, distinct from the previous Premier12 squad, and committed to leading them in their quest for a WBC ticket.

The qualifying tournament features eight teams split into A and B groups, with the top two advancing to the 2026 WBC. Taiwan, placed in Group A, will face Spain, South Africa, and Nicaragua starting Feb. 21. Fans eagerly anticipate the team's performance as it strives to secure a spot in the prestigious competition.
