TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA, 外交部) clarified on Tuesday (Feb. 4) that past pro-China remarks made by Mahmoud Adam Jama Galaal, the new Somaliland representative to Taiwan, were influenced by the domestic political situation in Somaliland at the time.

Chen Yung-po (陳詠博), deputy director-general of the Department of West Asian and African Affairs (亞西及非洲司), emphasized that Taiwan has maintained excellent communication with Somaliland's new government, including the president and Galaal, and that Galaal strongly supports deepening Taiwan-Somaliland ties.

The MOFA extended its welcome regarding Galaal's arrival in Taiwan and anticipates that relations between the two nations will continue to expand and deepen through joint efforts. This development marks a positive step toward strengthening diplomatic ties, with both parties committed to fostering a robust partnership.

Galaal's appointment was announced during the Lunar New Year holiday through a Facebook post by the Somaliland Representative Office in Taiwan. However, a 2022 tweet from Galaal questioned the benefits of opposing China. This tweet was in response to news about China's condemnation of a visit by Somaliland's then-foreign Minister.
