PINGTUNG (TVBS News) — Pingtung County Government (屏東縣政府) announced Friday (Feb. 7) the depletion of more than 230,000 doses of the 2024 public influenza vaccines, which began distribution Oct. 1 last year. A surge in vaccinations followed the death of entertainer Barbie Hsu (徐熙媛) from influenza-related pneumonia, reflecting heightened public concern.

From Monday to Thursday, Pingtung County Public Health Bureau (屏東縣政府衛生局) data recorded 15,187 vaccinations, indicating increased willingness among residents. In response, the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control (疾病管制署) will purchase an additional 100,000 doses for 11 high-risk groups, with Pingtung County Public Health Bureau coordinating the rollout.

The health bureau advised citizens to maintain good hygiene during the respiratory disease season and encouraged COVID-19 JN.1 vaccination while the influenza vaccine supply remains exhausted. Officials noted the CDC has expanded the criteria for public antiviral drug access to include individuals with flu-like symptoms who have close contacts exhibiting similar symptoms. Eligible individuals can access these medications through Feb. 28.

Last week, Pingtung issued antiviral medication to 756 individuals, with current stocks sufficient for over 14,000 people. Authorities assure residents there is no need for excessive concern regarding medication availability.
