TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Twenty-four Republican members of the U.S. (美國) House of Representatives on Thursday (Feb. 6) introduced a resolution urging the Trump administration to abandon the "One China policy." They aim to restore formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan (台灣) and support its inclusion in international trade organizations.
In response to the U.S. lawmakers initiative, the opposition Kuomintang (國民黨) emphasized on Friday (Feb. 7) that if the U.S. wants to reestablish formal diplomatic ties, it should be done under the name "Republic of China" (中華民國), aligning with historical and international legal facts. The party stressed the importance of deepening Taiwan-U.S. relations in a pragmatic and steady manner to ensure peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, which it considers the most responsible approach for the Taiwanese people.
The Kuomintang urged the Democratic Progressive Party government to adopt a more pragmatic approach to diplomacy to avoid escalating tensions in the Taiwan Strait. Only by ensuring stability can Taiwan truly safeguard its people. Kuomintang Legislator Niu Hsu-ting (牛煦庭) mentioned that he views the resolution by some U.S. representatives with a calm perspective. He cautioned that President Trump's leadership style might use this as a negotiation tool, with final decisions potentially depending on U.S.-China negotiations.
