NEW TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwanese actor Darren Wang (王大陸) was taken into custody by prosecutors and later released on bail for NT$150,000 on Tuesday (Feb. 18) for allegedly evading military service by falsifying medical records.
Authorities detained Wang and several others after accusations surfaced that they used a "military service broker" to forge documents.
The investigation led to the detention of three alleged brokers, surnamed Lee, Chang, and Lin, who face charges under the "Punishment Act for Violation to Military Service System" (妨害兵役治罪條例) and forgery. This group reportedly charged hundreds of thousands to millions of NT dollars to help service-eligible men avoid conscription through fake medical records or feigned illnesses.
Prosecutors formed a task force to gather evidence after receiving tips, leading to the arrest of multiple evaders, including a prestigious school graduate. One individual, surnamed Fang, attended Taipei Municipal Chien Kuo High School (建中) and the National Taiwan University School of Medicine (台大醫學系) and won a gold medal at the International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO).
Authorities warned that those attempting to evade conscription through body harm or other means face up to five years in prison under the "Punishment Act for Violation to Military Service System."
