TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwanese boxer Wu Shih-yi (吳詩儀) clinched victory in the 57kg category at the 76th International Boxing Tournament Strandja in Bulgaria on Sunday (March 2). Competing in her first international event since dropping weight classes, Wu defeated Kazakhstan's Aidana Zabynbekova 4-0, marking a significant milestone in her career.
After earning a bronze medal in the women's 60kg category at the Paris Olympics, Wu decided to compete in the 57kg category after discussing it with her coach. In the final, Wu, standing at 172 cm, faced the shorter Zabynbekova. Although her opponent launched an aggressive attack in the first round, Wu adapted within a minute and began to control the match using her reach advantage.
At the end of the first round, all five judges awarded Wu 10 points, while Zabynbekova received 9 points due to a penalty for consecutive fouls. In the second round, Wu's strategy appeared more conservative, with three judges awarding her 10 points and two favoring her opponent. Despite this, Wu maintained her overall lead.
Wu delivered a decisive performance in the third round, landing several effective combinations that secured her victory. The judges scored the bout 30-26, 30-26, 30-26, 28-28, and 29-27, resulting in Wu's 4-0 triumph. As Wu continues her journey in the 57kg category, her recent success sets a promising tone for future competitions.
