TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Ministry of Digital Affairs (MODA, 數位發展部) unveiled a prototype of the Taiwan Digital Identity Wallet (數位憑證皮夾) on Monday (March 10). By the end of March, officials plan to launch a trial sandbox and gradually release the source code, aiming for full deployment by December.
Minister Huang Yen-nun (黃彥男) emphasized that digital certificates will serve as the foundation of a digital society, granting citizens control over their identity data. He noted that the selective disclosure mechanism enhances data protection.
The Ministry explained that the wallet will allow citizens to securely store digital certificates, such as national identification, health insurance cards, and driver's licenses, enabling quick verification via mobile phones.
Also, the ministry clarified that the initial name "Digital Wallet" led to misconceptions as a payment tool, prompting a rebranding to emphasize its non-payment and non-digital ID nature. Officials suggested that the applications will be opened for the trial phase at the end of March, continuing until the official release.
Furthermore, the ministry said the digital identity wallet will adopt international standards, facilitating global cross-border digital verification, underscoring Taiwan's commitment to digital human rights, and strengthening its role in international digital cooperation.
The ministry highlighted that the wallet will simplify citizens' daily digital lives, inviting collaboration with the Taipei City Government (台北市政府), Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA, 經濟部), Ministry of the Interior (MOI, 內政部), and others to drive digital transformation and innovation.
