MODA unveils digital certificate wallet (TVBS News)

TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Ministry of Digital Affairs (MODA, 數位發展部) unveiled a prototype of the "Digital Certificate Wallet" (數位憑證皮夾) on Monday (March 10) to enhance the convenience and security of digital identity verification.

This tool allows citizens to store and use digital documents, such as national ID cards, health insurance cards, and driver's licenses, securely on their smartphones. MODA plans to launch a regulatory sandbox by the end of March and will gradually release the source code.

Minister of Digital Affairs Huang Yen-nun (黃彥男) highlighted three key implications of the wallet for Taiwan's digital development. He stated that digital certificates will become the cornerstone of digital society, serving as the core for various digital services. Moreover, a selective disclosure mechanism will allow citizens to control their personal document data, enhancing privacy protection.

The certificate system's international interoperability will support Taiwan's development of the digital economy, and accelerate the transition to an era of smart governance. MODA emphasized that the wallet adopts global standards to ensure system security and cross-border digital verification capabilities.

MODA will continue to promote digital transformation through collaboration among government agencies and the private sector, aiming to establish a comprehensive digital verification and authorization ecosystem.
