TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen (盧秀燕) unveiled an ambitious vision Monday (June 2) for a massive "Super Dome" entertainment venue to be constructed in the city's developing Shuinan Economic and Trade Park (水湳經貿園區), with completion targeted for 2030. The project represents one of central Taiwan's most significant infrastructure investments of the decade and signals Taichung's aspirations to become a major entertainment hub.
The preliminary concept images showcase a versatile facility designed to accommodate more than 30,000 spectators for professional baseball games, international concerts, and major cultural events. This capacity would position the venue among Taiwan's largest entertainment facilities and represent a significant enhancement to central Taiwan's cultural and sporting infrastructure.
The proposed "Super Dome" will sprawl across 16.3 hectares within the park's designated Chuangyan 1 development zone. This substantial land allocation underscores the project's scale and the municipal government's commitment to creating a landmark venue capable of hosting world-class events in Taiwan's third-largest city.
Mayor Lu emphasized that the revealed concept images represent preliminary visualizations rather than finalized architectural plans. The mayor noted that design proposals submitted by potential developers under the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) framework — a public-private partnership model common in Taiwan's infrastructure projects — will serve as a crucial evaluation criterion in the selection process.
DPP councilor Chen Ya-hui (陳雅惠) voiced opposition to the Build-Operate-Transfer approach, arguing that this financing model fails to address fundamental concerns about the project.
