TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Chunghwa Telecom (CHT, 中華電信), Taiwan's largest telecommunications company, announced Wednesday (Jun 4) it has achieved a significant industry milestone by becoming the first Taiwanese firm to obtain government approval for commercial operation of OneWeb's low-Earth-orbit satellite fixed communication services. In its official statement, the telecom giant confirmed that regulatory authorities had granted the groundbreaking license on Tuesday, positioning the company at the forefront of Taiwan's emerging satellite communications sector.

Chia Chung-yung (賈仲雍), who serves as president of CHT's business group, emphasized the strategic importance of securing this pioneering license. "This achievement stands as the strongest validation of our network technology capabilities," Chia stated in the company announcement, adding that it demonstrates Chunghwa Telecom's unwavering dedication to propelling Taiwan's satellite communications infrastructure into a new era of technological advancement and market expansion.

CHT Chairman Alex C.C. Chien (簡志誠) outlined the company's strategic vision in the announcement, pledging continued investment in cutting-edge technologies that position Taiwan as an increasingly self-reliant player in international satellite communications. "This initiative significantly bolsters Taiwan's competitiveness and technological autonomy on the global stage," Chien remarked. The telecommunications leader plans to develop a comprehensive multi-orbit satellite network infrastructure, with investments spanning high, medium, and low orbit satellite systems to dramatically enhance the island's communications network resilience against potential disruptions. ◼
