TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP, 民進黨) caucus introduced a resolution in the Legislative Yuan (Taiwan's parliament, 立法院) on Friday (July 4) condemning Beijing for its diplomats pursuing Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴) during her Czech Republic visit in March 2024, nearly triggering a traffic incident. The DPP demanded an official apology from the People's Republic of China (中華人民共和國).

Czech intelligence officials confirmed in June that Chinese diplomats had tracked Vice President Hsiao during her visit as a vice presidential candidate last year, approaching her motorcade by running a red light. Legislator Wu Szu-yao (吳思瑤) expressed deep concern over the deliberate threats Hsiao faced during her diplomatic mission. Wu observed that while international organizations have voiced support for Taiwan, some opposition legislators allegedly failed to condemn the Chinese Communist Party (CCP, 中國共產黨), prompting this resolution urging the parliament to condemn Beijing.

The proposal simultaneously calls for expedited reforms in national security legislation to strengthen anti-infiltration measures, anti-espionage capabilities, and protection of critical technologies. The resolution underscores Taiwan's sovereign right to conduct international visits by its leaders and officials without foreign interference. The proposal appeals for bipartisan unity in the Legislative Yuan Taiwan's parliament to safeguard Taiwan's sovereignty and democratic values against China's threats and infiltration while ensuring national security and social stability. ◼
