TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Typhoon Danas swept southern Taiwan over the weekend, bringing rare and destructive winds to Tainan. The Central Disaster Response Center (CDRC, 中央災害應變中心) reported as of 9 am Monday (July 7) that the typhoon left two people dead and 334 injured nationwide.
In Tainan, the typhoon caused two fatalities. According to the investigation, a 60-year-old man died after a power outage rendered his respirator inoperative. Later, a 69-year-old man died when a coconut tree fell on his agricultural vehicle. The Yujing Police Precinct (玉井警分局) reported that the vehicle, carrying mangoes, was crushed on Route 175 in Nansi District (楠西區). The man's son was injured and sent to the hospital.
Police have advised residents to stay indoors during typhoons and drive with caution, emphasizing the importance of using headlights, maintaining safe distances, and reducing speed to ensure safety. Typhoon Danas, which brought level 13 winds, marked a meteorological record in over 30 years in Tainan.
