TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's triumphant athletes returned home on Monday (July 28) to enthusiastic celebrations after dominating the FISU World University Games badminton competition, claiming two gold medals, three silvers, and one bronze. The mixed doubles squad achieved an unprecedented sweep of all three medal positions, with Yang Chu-yun (楊筑云) and Wu Hsuan-yi (吳軒毅) capturing gold in their second consecutive Universiade championship. Their historic achievement highlighted Taiwan's exceptional depth in international badminton competition.

Yang expressed profound joy at claiming the championship, while Wu conveyed his excitement about securing gold, particularly as Taiwan swept all mixed doubles medals. The men's singles competition saw 21-year-old Ting Chen (丁彥宸), a National Taiwan University student (NTU, 國立台灣大學), capture the gold medal in impressive fashion. Ting described the victory as exceeding his expectations and expressed deep satisfaction with his breakthrough performance on the international stage.

Ting's championship path began with his breakthrough victory in the men's B group at the 2021 National Ranking Tournament, ultimately culminating in his FISU World University Games triumph. Coach Liao Wei-chieh (廖偉喆) commended the team's exceptional mental toughness and valuable international competition experience that proved decisive. Meanwhile, Tang Chih-chun (湯智鈞) shattered Taiwan's 20-year gold medal drought in men's recurve archery with a dramatic shoot-off victory that electrified spectators.

Tang articulated his ambitious goals of competing in the 2026 Asian Games and 2028 Olympics, with podium finishes firmly in his sights. The archer's breakthrough performance has positioned him as a serious contender for future international competitions. His victory represents a significant milestone for Taiwan's archery program and signals renewed competitiveness on the global stage. ◼
