TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Popular Taiwanese artists Enno Cheng (鄭宜農) and Abao (阿爆), and the Bulareyaung Dance Company (布拉瑞揚舞團) performed in New York's Central Park Sunday (Aug. 3). The performers hosted the vibrant "Taiwanese Waves" (台灣之夜) event, part of the SummerStage 2025 Festival held in the park throughout the summer. The performance drew a large crowd and captivated audiences with a rich showcase of Taiwanese music and dance.
Abao and the Nanguaq Girls (那屋瓦少女隊) female dance group delivered a stunning performance of melodious Indigenous Taiwanese compositions that traversed various musical styles. Their songs, sung in the Bunun (布農) and Paiwan (排灣) languages, ranged from old to new, evoking cross-generational memories and inspiring the audience to dance along. Their synergy with the Bulareyaung Dance Company created an electrifying atmosphere, and seated listeners couldn't resist getting swept away by the infectious energy and getting up to dance.
Enno Cheng's electrifying set featured tracks from her album "Moon Phases" (圓缺), including "Remains in Our Blood" (留佇咱的血內底) and "Rarely Think of It" (真罕得想起來). Her powerful electronic music transformed the nighttime stage into a mystical realm, offering the audience a taste of Taiwan's cross-border creative scene. "Moon Phases," Cheng's second all-Taiwanese album, merges techno and house with a Taiwanese style, breathing new life into rhythm and language.
Since 1986, Central Park's SummerStage has attracted numerous spectators and tourists every summer. Taiwanese artists have been part of the lineup since 2016, with past performers including Wanfang Lin (萬芳), Soft Lipa (蛋堡), 9m88, and Waa Wei (魏如萱). This year's event continued the tradition of celebrating Taiwanese pop music, offering audiences an opportunity to bridge cultural divides and unite people in the universal appeal of music.
