TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. addressed China's discontent over his recent remarks on potential conflict in the Taiwan Strait during a press conference at Malacañang Palace Monday (Aug. 11). Marcos Jr. said he is stating the truth about regional security concerns. His comments came after China's Foreign Ministry accused the Philippines of misinterpreting Beijing's "One China" policy and urged adherence to it.
Marcos Jr. emphasized that while the Philippines does not seek war, it must prepare for possible involvement if conflict erupts in Taiwan. The Philippine leader highlighted the need for evacuation plans for Filipino citizens and territorial protection measures. He also reiterated the Philippines' commitment to patrolling and defending its territorial claims in the South China Sea, where Chinese vessels have reportedly encroached on disputed waters.
Former Philippine Representative to Taiwan, Angelito Banayo, noted the difficulty for the Philippines to remain uninvolved in a Taiwan Strait conflict due to U.S. military bases in Northern Philippines facing Taiwan. Lucio Pitlo III, a researcher at the Asia-Pacific Pathways to Progress Foundation (亞太進步之道基金會), remarked on Beijing's displeasure but affirmed the Philippines' diplomatic autonomy. Pitlo also mentioned that ASEAN Southeast Asian bloc countries might request Philippine assistance in evacuating and temporarily accommodating their nationals, presenting a potential challenge for Manila. ◼
