TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Ministry of Labor (勞動部) announced Monday (Sept. 1) that 245 businesses and 4,863 workers face reduced work hours, representing increases of 54 businesses and 929 workers from the previous Aug. 18 report. More than 60 percent of these reductions stem from U.S. tariffs impacting Taiwan's export-dependent economy.

The ministry reported this represents a decrease of 30 businesses compared with the same period last year, though affected workers rose by 404. Huang Chi-ya (黃琦雅), director of the Ministry's Department of Labor Standards and Equal Employment (勞動條件及就業平等司), identified manufacturing as the hardest-hit sector during a press conference. The sector encompasses 191 businesses and 4,479 workers, with metal and mechanical industries bearing the heaviest burden at 156 businesses and 3,685 workers.

Huang explained that two medium-sized machinery manufacturers reported reduced work hours for the first time. One drilling machine manufacturer primarily exports to North America and has 110 workers experiencing fewer hours. A tool machine manufacturer serving both domestic and international markets saw 103 workers impacted by declining orders.

The Ministry of Labor has implemented employment stabilization measures for 168 businesses and 3,812 workers, pledging continued monitoring to support stable employment. Officials emphasized that reduced work hours do not constitute unpaid leave. Businesses must maintain labor and health insurance coverage, contribute to worker pensions, and ensure wages meet minimum wage requirements. ◼
