TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Deputy Premier Cheng Li-chiun (鄭麗君) outlined Monday (Sept. 1) how the island's trade negotiation team will respond after a U.S. appeals court ruled against President Donald Trump's use of emergency economic powers to impose tariffs. The team will closely monitor American developments. Officials await decisions from both the U.S. government and Supreme Court.
The ruling does not prevent Washington from imposing reciprocal tariffs on other nations, Cheng noted. She emphasized the negotiation team's mission to secure better and fairer rates for Taiwan's industries while remaining vigilant about future developments. The deputy premier reiterated the team's unwavering commitment to advocating for Taiwan's economic interests.
In a related administrative shift, Xavier Chang (張惇涵) moved from Deputy Secretary-General of the Presidential Office to Secretary-General of the Executive Yuan, Taiwan's cabinet. Former Secretary-General Kung Ming-hsin (龔明鑫) transitioned to Minister of Economic Affairs. Cheng, representing Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰), noted both officials' significant roles in Taiwan-U.S. economic negotiations and expressed confidence in their seamless transition.
The deputy premier reported that the negotiation team, comprising multiple governmental departments, remains dedicated to pursuing better tax rates for Taiwan's industries. Officials will continue working to ensure favorable outcomes as U.S. trade policies continue shifting. The team maintains its focus on protecting Taiwan's economic interests. ◼
