TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署) reported on Wednesday (Sept. 3) that a tropical depression, TD18, will cause significant weather changes across Taiwan. The Pacific high and TD18 will lead to cloudy skies and scattered thunderstorms, particularly in western Taiwan, the Hengchun Peninsula (恆春半島), and the mountainous regions of Yilan, Hualien, and Taitung.
TD18, located 650 kilometers southeast of Naha, could develop into a tropical storm. The Administration warned of increased afternoon thunderstorms and heavy rain in mountainous areas over the coming days. The CWA also advised residents to be cautious of lightning, strong gusts, and flash floods, as the risk of rainfall heightens in the afternoon across western and eastern mountain regions.
The Administration noted that the sun remains intense despite cloudy conditions, with ultraviolet levels reaching excessive levels. Taipei's plains and areas near the mountains in Pingtung might experience temperatures up to 35 degrees Celsius. In contrast, Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu are experiencing milder temperatures from 27 to 32 degrees, with partly cloudy to clear skies.
The CWA forecasts that Thursday will bring mostly cloudy to clear weather, with isolated showers in the Hengchun Peninsula. The Pacific high will slightly strengthen on Friday as the week progresses, leading to drier conditions. Meanwhile, enhanced easterly winds will bring more showers to eastern regions and the Hengchun Peninsula starting Saturday.
